balance and fall. If you must move when wearing your fins out of the water, be sure to move by shuffling your feet backward or by side stepping (figure 3-4). Never try to walk forward in your fins. You might need to don your mask and snorkel last so that you will not restrict your vision when you are out of the water. One procedure to don your mask is: 1. Position the mask on your face. 2. Slide the strap down over the back or your head(- figure 3-5). 3. Check the skirt of the mask to be sure that no hair or part of any suit hood are caught under the skirt (figure 3-6). Be sure that your mask strap is not too tight. If the mask and strap are too tight, it will not be comfortable. If you are going in the water to snorkel, place the snorkel in your mouth and adjust it along the strap so the snorkel fits easily into your mouth (figure 3-7). Using Your Fins Your fins provide you with thrust and stability in the water. When you are fully equipped for diving, you must use the large muscles in your legs for propulsion. Using your legs frees your hands to carry a camera and take pictures, a light for night diving, or use other items. You can move your fins in a number of ways to create propulsion. The most common kick is the flutter kick (figure 3-8). This kick differs in many ways from a swimmer’s flutter kick. When you kick with fins, think of NAUI Scuba Diver 50 Diving Skills FIGURE 3-4.
