1. Get into a vertical position, right side down or lean to the right. 2. Bring your right elbow into your side. 3. Touch your right hand to your thigh and then move it back to touch your cylinder. 4. Sweep your right arm out from your cylinder in a big circle around to the front of your body. Your primary regulator should be in the bend of your arm (figure 3-39). 5. Put your primary regulator in your mouth and either blast or purge clear the second stage. Always remember to blow a steady stream of small bubbles whenever the regulator is out of your mouth. Reach Method Use the following steps to find your regulator using the reach method: 1. Reach over your right shoulder with your right hand and grasp the first stage of your regulator. It might be necessary to lift your cylinder from the bottom with your left hand. 2. Feel for the primary regulator hose on the upper or front right side of your first stage (figure 3-40). 3. Follow the hose down to the end. Your primary regulator will be at the end of the hose. 4. Put your regulator in your mouth and either blast or purge clear the second stage. Remember, if you happen to recover your back-up second stage or cannot immediately locate your primary second stage, you can always use your own back-up regulator or redundant scuba system for breathing until you find your primary second stage. Use the alternate air source only until you can find your primary regulator or you can get your buddy’s attention and assistance to locate your primary regulator. Breathing from a Free-Flowing Regulator When a regulator begins delivering air continuously, it is free-flowing (figure 3-41). To stop a free-flow, turn the regulator so the mouthpiece opening is down. Fortunately, this is about the only problem you will ever have with a regulator, and it is usually not serious. However, you should not dive with a free-flowing regulator. If the regulator starts to flow continuously during your dive, you can continue to breathe from the regulator by using the following procedure: 1. Using your hand, hold the mouthpiece loosely in your mouth. 2. Breathe the air you need from the stream of air escaping from the mouthpiece.
