2. Hold on to them with one hand and position your buddy in front of you. This position allows your buddy to keep the mouthpiece of the secondary regulator easily in their mouth and allows you both to maintain physical and eye contact (figure 3-53). 3. Ask your buddy if they are okay and wait for a reply. 4. Give your buddy the up signal and wait for their reply before starting your ascent. Once your buddy is breathing and is okay, you should carry out your normal ascent procedure. The normal ascent rate is 9 meters (30 feet) per minute if you are using dive tables. If you are using a redundant contingency scuba system, you should still perform the steps of ascending together after you pass the system to your buddy. Buddy Breathing Method The other method of sharing air with your buddy is the buddy breathing method. If you do not have a secondary regulator or redundant contingency scuba system, you share air by passing your primary regulator back and forth. This procedure is simple, but requires a higher level of skill from you and your buddy. Buddy breathing and ascending at the same time can be done successfully with training and practice in confined water. However, you must frequently review the steps if buddy breathing is to be successful when it might be needed. If your scuba is not set up with a secondary regulator, you should rehearse buddy-breathing techniques before entering the water. You should practice again in shallow water at the beginning of every dive to renew your skills and coordinate procedures. Use the following steps for buddy breathing: 1. Take a deep breath of air and start exhaling when your buddy gives you the out of air signal. 2. Grasp your buddy’s right shoulder strap with your left hand. 3. Hold your regulator by the hose and near the mouthpiece and remove it from your mouth, using your right hand. Turn the mouthpiece down so the regulator does not freeflow. Keep exhaling a small stream of bubbles. 4. Pass the regulator to your buddy by the hose and let them guide the regulator into their mouth. Always give them access to the purge button so they can clear the second stage of water. 5. Continue to use your left hand to hold your NAUI Scuba Diver 78 Diving Skills FIGURE 3-53. MAINTAIN PHYSICAL CONTACT THROUGHOUT YOUR ENTIRE OCTOPUS ASCENT.
