NAUI Scuba Diver 84 Diving Skills while you are under water, you must surface and look to the boat for instructions. They might need to reposition the anchor and just want to see where all their divers are, or they might need to have everyone return to the boat because of an emergency. Surface Communication At the surface, you can use different types of audible and visual signals to communicate. You use some of the standard hand signals at the surface. For example, if you wave to someone from the surface, it is a sign of distress, NOT a way to say hello. Dive boats have a blue and white flag that they fly when they want divers to return to the boat (figure 3-60). When you surface and see this flag, return immediately to the boat. Audible communication is possible at the surface, but yelling is not effective at a long distance over the water. A whistle produces a loud sound that you can hear at a considerable distance. Also, using a whistle does not take a lot of energy. A repeated series of four short blasts on a whistle is a standard distress signal.
