FREC updates license renewal requirements to include ethics Renewals after March 2018 need a three-hour ethics class The 14-hour requirement to renew a Florida real estate license hasn't changed – but the mandatory courses will for any real estate licensee who needs to renew their license after March 31, 2018. The rule directly impacts real estate licensees who must renew by September 30, 2018. Under the new rules, a three-hour ethics and business practices course becomes mandatory as part of the renewal package, and Florida real estate licensees who do not complete that course before the September 30, 2018, deadline will not be able to renew their real estate license. Under the continuing education 14-hour requirement, a real estate license renewal after March 31, 2018, must include: • Three-hour core law course • Three-hour ethics and business practices course • Eight hours of specialty courses (may include a second core law course) The change does not impact post-education requirements that apply to renewal of an initial license. In some cases, the National Association of REALTORS’® REALTOR® Code of Ethics training requirement – once every two years – can do double-duty as a CE course under the new ethics and business practices credit category for license renewal. "If the code of ethics course that REALTORS® complete to meet their biennial NAR ethics requirement is taken during the licensee's renewal cycle and approved by FREC as a three-hour ethics and business practices course, this one course should satisfy both NAR and the new continuing education component requirement," says Meredith Caruso, Florida Realtors manager of member legal communications.
