A Classic Article THE 6 Cs FOR PICKING GREAT LEADERS By Patrick Morley Bill Bright, Founder of Campus Crusade, often said, “Everything boils down to leadership.” Nothing will deflate our ministries 10 quicker than not having the right leaders. If you ran a business, you would never promote someone because they said, “I’d like to be the vice-president of this company.” You would promote people because you appreciated their work ethic, their personality, their character, etc. Why, then, would we give key leadership positions in the church to someone “just because they want it” or “just because they are available.” One of the least strategic things we can do is to let people self-select themselves for leadership. Ask yourself this question, Do I simply enjoy being around this person? 2 Chemistry: They have an ability to get along with people. Does this person have good people skills? How do they deal with conflicts or difficult people? 3 Character: They act with integrity. Does this person have a strong sense that God has gifted and directed them to pursue your vision and mission? Are you looking for a person to lead your small group leaders or a congregational care service or any other leadership position at your church? If you find a leader who passes these six tests you probably have a winner. Don’t wait for leaders like this to approach you (someone else may see the same attributes you do and ask first! ). Recruit them to your leadership team. THE 6 Cs F
