T �� NEW HAMPSHIRE’S FAMILY RESORT Rumor has it that snowcats drew you to the ski business? My dad was a ski patroller at Mount Holiday in Traverse City, Michigan, but as a kid, my family and I spent time with my mom’s side, traveling out to Winter Park, Colorado. When I was about 13, my uncle, Dave Dean, who was a mountain planner and developer for Winter Park, explained to me that operating a snowcat was the best job on the hill – that guy gets to go skiing all day long, and his job doesn’t start until everyone else is off the mountain. But going to college and studying ski area management, I knew I needed to know more about the mechanical aspects of this industry and how they all worked and tied together – I didn’t even hough he was born and raised a flatlander in Traverse City, Michigan, Tim Smith has spent the vast majority of his 37 years either skiing, thinking about skiing, or studying ski area management. “My entire existence has involved sliding on a white slippery surface,” he says. “That’s all I base my life around.” Since 2014, the lifelong skier, camper, runner, cereal-eater, and father of 6-yearold twin boys has brought his love of the mountains, of NOFX, and of major fun to Waterville Valley, infusing each winter with just a little more wonder. To find out what makes Tim tick, we talked to those who know him best, including his wife, Katie (accounting manager at the resort), along with season pass holders to come up with a list of questions and put the playful manager to the test.
