Pittsb rgh and De i h h THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA | 2017-2018 15 STUART MALINA Principal Guest Conductor Stuart Malina’s ease on the podium, engaging personality, and insightful interpretations have thrilled audiences and helped to break down the barriers between performer and listener. Now entering his eighteenth season as music director and conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra and his fifth season as principal guest conductor of TFO, he was previously music director of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and associate conductor of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with the orchestras of Hong Kong, Naples, New Mexico, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Detroit, the Chautauqua Institution Orchestra, as well as the Sarasota Music Festival and Eastern Music Festival. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2007, conducting the New York Pops in an all-Gershwin tribute. Last season, he conducted two concert tours in Russia, under the auspices of the United States Embassy. An accomplished pianist, Malina has impressive credits as soloist and chamber musician. In recent seasons, he has performed several concerti, including Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, and both Gershwin’s Concerto in F and Rhapsody in Blue, including performances with TFO under the baton of Michael Francis. As a composer and arranger, Malina has created dozens of orchestral works. His most recent composition, Common Fanfare for an Uncommon Orchestra, was written in honor of TFO’s 50th anniversary season and will receive its premiere this fall. On Broadway, he won a Tony award for orchestration with Billy Joel for the musical Movin’ Out and has served as associate conductor of the national touring company of West Side Story and conductor of the Charleston and international productions of Porgy and Bess.
