THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA | 2017-2018 Rising young soprano Madison Leonard joins the Washington National Opera this season as a member of the Domingo- Cafritz Young Artist Program, where she sings High Priestess in Aida, The Rose in Portman’s The Little Prince, Morgana for the young artist performance of Alcina, and Zegner Sister 1 in Missy Mazzoli’s new opera, Proving Up as a part of the American Opera Initiative Festival. She also returns to The Florida Orchestra for Orff’s Carmina Burana. In the summer of 2017, she joined Wolf Trap Opera as a Filene Young Artist and sang Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with the National Symphony Orchestra as well as Madeline in Glass’ The Fall of the House of Usher and the Daughter in Glass’ The Juniper Tree.  Other highlights from her 2016/2017 season included Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with Amarillo Opera, Adele in Die Fledermaus with Opera Idaho, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Coeur d’Alene, and a concert of opera favorites with The Florida Orchestra. With the prestigious Merola Opera Program in association with San Francisco Opera, she sang Monica in Menotti’s The Medium as well as Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel for the program’s annual Grand Finale Concert.   She is a 2017 second place winner of the northwest region for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and first place winner of the Houston Grand Opera’s Eleanor McCollum Competition. Madison Leonard holds a master’s of music degree from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s of music from Pepperdine University. Hailed by Opera News as “the very picture of youthful optimism and potential,” John Kaneklides is quickly establishing himself as a celebrated tenor of his time. This sea s o n , Kaneklides returns to St. Petersburg Opera to make his debut in the title role of Les Contes d’Hoffmann. He will also star as Villiers in the New York premier of Carlisle Floyd’s The Prince of Players with the Little Opera Theatre. Additionally, he will be a featured soloist in the Eve Queler and Friends concert series with the Opera Orchestra of New York and in Statesville, North Carolina, with Opera Experience Southeast. In past seasons, he has earned notable acclaim for his portrayals of Alfredo in La traviata, Nemorino in L’elisire d’amore, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Rodolfo in La bohème, Jeník in The Bartered Bride, and Fenton in The Merry Wives of Windsor, among many others. He is also quickly making a name for himself in classic musical theater roles, such as Henrik in A Little Night Music and Tony in West Side Story. Kaneklides holds a Raphael Bundage Young Artist Award and the Orpheus National Competition’s Bel Canto Prize. He also garnered second prize from the Opera Guild of Charlotte Competition and received honors from the 2013 International Liederkranz Foundation Competition, Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and Nico Castel International Master Singer Competition. Kaneklides is a proud native of North Carolina and currently resides in New York City. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocal performance from Winthrop University, as well as a bachelor’s in finance. He is a student of Bill Schumann.
