Moments to Decades: TFO Timeline This season our five program books will highlight the orchestra’s rich history in Tampa Bay; each book covers 10 seasons. Five decades ago on a boat in the middle of Tampa Bay, the St. Petersburg Symphony and the Tampa Philharmonic came together in a “marriage” ceremony. Incorporated in 1967, the orchestra first performed in 1968. Now The Florida Orchestra has grown into the premier – and largest – professional orchestra in the state. It is still the only performing arts organization that bridges the entire bay area, with concerts in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Florida Gulf Coast Symphony Debut: Nov 14, 1968 First music director: Irwin Hoffman Budget: $260,000 Season: Five concerts, with three performances each -- two in Tampa at McKay Auditorium and one in St. Petersburg at Bayfront Center (now Mahaffey Theater).
