DRUGS, A PROBLEM con't from FRONT PAGE SANDHILLS VET FEST continued Illustration by L. S. Crain, Southern Pines. young age. Teachers are more than happy to help. And in many cases, teachers are commended for introducing drugs to the young populace. They helped cure a problem—hyperactivity. Most states have “special needs” programs which sounds like a noble cause, but is it? Once a child is deemed special needs, then all kinds of social money comes loose, and of course, a prescription is offered. The teachers are commended for curing a problem; the parents get money from SSI and other sources; and they ensure that all their kids are in the special needs category. Not to be outdone, all the neighbors want in on the deal as well. Where one goes, the flock follows, and the issue grows all under the guise of social help to the needy and underprivileged. But wait, there’s more! The remainder of the flock should not be left out; my kid is hyper too! If drugs helped Johnny, then they will help my Billy. Look into 95% of the public school systems in America and see for yourself. Ask how many kids are on some kind of prescription drug for hyperactivity? The picture starts to come into focus. If it is good for me in grade school, then high school is even better. Then comes graduation, no more drugs. Now what? Well, friends have suggested to try this... And the drug war goes on. We will never stop the flow if there is a demand. And we can never stop the demand as long as the medical, school administrations and parents are clamoring for mind–altering means to maintain discipline and control. Note: The idea for this article came from a friend of mine who served on a school board in Idaho. They tried to put his 6th grade son into a ‘screening program’ to address his hyperactivity. 100% of those screened were then eligible for treatment and other benefits. This same son just graduated with a PhD from a prestigious University. This led my friend to do some research into what was going on. He found that 30% of the enrolled students were classified as “special needs,” creating a “learning disability.” Getting a doctor to certify that there was an “organic cause” was all that was needed. If your current doctor wouldn’t do it, then they could recommend one who would. The school system kept the kids in the schools (good for statistics and extra money), and the teachers were happy as the medicated children caused little problems. Who knows what they did for actual grades. Parents were ecstatic, as they got a nice check every month for each child enrolled in the program. And you can see why the drug problem grows. If you can’t, then double down on the Ritalin! Sandhills Vet Fest by Rick Herrera The United States unescapably entered the Great War known today as WWI in April of 1917, joining the Allied Forces made up of the Russians, French, and the British, which were fighting the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. This war involved tens of millions of people from across the globe, four million of which came from the United States. Many young American patriots from the Sandhills of North Carolina answered their country’s call to duty without hesitation and made incredible sacrifices for their families and countrymen. Nineteen months later, on 11 November 1918, at 11:00AM in Paris, a historic event took place that would cease the fighting. The signing of the Armistice signified, and to this day, commemorates the end of WWI. It was on this day that the Central Powers surrendered to the Allies, officially ending the war. Since the signing of the Armistice in 1918, there have only been a handful of Armistice or Veterans Day celebrations in Southern Pines. The very first parade took place in the streets of downtown Southern Pines 1921, and the last parade took place in 1941 when 1,200 members of the 209th Coast Artillery along with their band marched through downtown after which they were given two hours of leave, which they spent mingling and shopping. 1921 Armistice Day Parade in Sou Pines. In 2012, Southern Pines, at the request of town and local veteran leaders, rekindled the Southern Pines Veterans Parade. A small team of highly-motivated and extremely-dedicated veterans led the charge, and in 67 days the town of Southern Pines had its first Veterans’ Parade in 71 years. The late David Woodruff, a son of Southern Pines, a renowned local historian, and author wrote, “With 12% of Moore County’s population being military veterans, there is no doubt this was the right thing to do. In some circles, Southern Pines is known as a military town.” David Woodruff was instrumental in the vision, growth, and evolution of what is known today as the Sandhills Vet Fest and the Southern Pines Veterans Parade. These events are his legacy. The late Mr. David Woodruff, a Son of Southern Pines and Renowned Historian. On 11 November 2017, at 10AM, we will be commemorating the 5th Annual Southern Pines Veterans Parade. We take great pride fulfilling our mission statement, “Support Our Troops, and Honor Our Veterans,” and living up to our motto, “For Veterans, By Veterans.” This is a very planning, labor, and fiscally intensive undertaking, and we would like to take this moment to express our unconditional appreciation for our tremendous veterans, sponsors, and selfless volunteers, for without this winning combination, there would not be a Southern Pines Veterans Parade or a Sandhills Vet Fest. 2017 Sandhills Vet Fest Schedule of Events: Sun, 29 Oct, 1PM: Strokes of Patriotism.
