WHAT’S UP AT THE RAG? by Marcus Lawson, Programs Co-Director Taking a walk down Sunset Avenue in Downtown Asheboro is more than ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ await those who take that stroll. ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� years. This organization has gone unnoticed by the residents of Asheboro and Randolph County at times, but all of that is about to change! The Randolph Arts Guild was founded in 1972 by Dwight Holland and a group of people who saw a need for Randolph County to have a local arts council. Over the years, the RAG - as the locals lovingly call it - has supported the arts and artists of Randolph County in various ways. �������� ������ ������������ �������� �������� ������ ���������������������� ������ ���������� ���������������� ������ �������� ������������������������������ to make art a part of their lives. The gift shop bustles from time to time with customers perusing local handmade items, arts and crafts. The Sarah Smith Self Gallery displays the work of artists from Randolph County and the larger North Carolina community. Come and sit a spell and create with our regular ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� your hand at theatre with the RSVP group. ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� drawing and painting classes, but they have added so many more classes to ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� and weaving workshops, edible arts classes, wreath and bow tying classes, and ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� On top of that, the RAG is now branching out into supporting the musical arts! The third Monday of each month, the RAG descends on Sunset Theatre with a local musician and puts on the Emerging Artists concert. Doors open at 6pm, so one can meet the musician in person, with music starting at 7 pm. The RAG has re-started the Kindermusik program with Ellane Campbell to spark a passion for music in our tiniest residents. Ever wanted to take up an instrument? Join Tamara Hill for piano and ukulele lessons! The Randolph Arts Guild has grown over the past few months, and they aren’t done yet! The organization does more than organize the local Fall Festival. It provides assistance to local groups through the Grassroots Grants initiative, supports local artists, art teachers and the arts in Randolph County, brings together potters from around the state and nation to network during the annual NC Potters Conference, and provides opportunities for all of the residents of Randolph County to make the arts a part of their lives.
