2017 Martin Marietta Scholarships Cassidie Campbell University of North Texas She’s led Sunday school classrooms, coached children on the ball field and held down a job while earning a spot in the National Honor Society. Cassidie Campbell is quick to share her accomplishments with the women she admires, but knows there’s greater importance in sharing them with the women who admire her. “I’m the oldest of five girls and I’ve always felt my mother took on the bulk of responsibility when it came to raising us,” she said. “I’ve always done what I could to ease that load. Now, I’m going to be the first person in the family to go to college and I’m proud to have set that example for my sisters.” While today it’s second nature for the 19-year-old University of North Texas (UNT) freshman to stand out as an example for others, as a child she needed someone to model that behavior. She found that someone quickly. “It all started with Ms. Karen Butner, my first grade teacher,” Campbell said. “I’ve stayed close with her over the years. She’s one of those teachers who works until 7 p.m. and spends her own money to make sure her students have all they need.” A UNT alum, Butner heavily influenced the teen. When Campbell began to truly consider a career in education, she sought Butner’s counsel. To gain experience over the past two years, she’s worked in her mentor’s elementary classroom. After college, she plans to follow Butner into education. One day, she hopes to become a principal. “I know how much work it will take because I’ve personally seen it,” Campbell said. “Still, I’m willing to put in that effort. I’ve always had a heart for young children.” When seeking role models outside of school, Campbell didn’t have too far to look. Through his own example, Midlothian Cement Plant Maintenance Apprentice Daniel Minor, Campbell’s stepfather, provided ample lessons in the value of hard work. For just about everything else, the teen looked to her mother, Shelley Minor. “Throughout my life, my mom has shown me what a strong woman looks like,” Campbell said. “Now, it’s my time to show her that she’s always been one my biggest role models. I want to show her that I’ve learned how to be strong by watching her example.” ▼ Cassidie Campbell with her stepfather, Daniel Minor, and mother, Shelley Minor.
