Sarah Storch was just a child when her sixth grade choir director taught her the importance of finding her voice. To this day, the teen is an excellent singer who is never shy about performing, but it took another medium for her true self to break through. “I don’t know what it is about art, but it just comes naturally,” she says. “I can’t describe it. Soon after my first art class, I had a strange realization. I never had to erase and I never had to think about what I was doing. Since then, I’ve tried to convey my thoughts and feelings through my art.” She volunteers through her church, is president and co-president of her school’s Chemistry and German clubs, respectively, and is a member of the National Honor Society, but for Storch, the greatest reward comes from creating a work of art. Her obvious joy in the process has led to great success. Working through the National Art Honor Society, a group with which she serves as a local historian, Storch helped her school plan and host an annual Visual Arts Scholastic Event competition. Still a student and able to submit her own works, Storch earned five first place regional medals over a three-year period. She would go on to medal in several other regional art Sarah Storch Texas State University competitions and, on two occasions, medal in state competitions as well. Her work has even been displayed in the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Despite her achievements, Storch is unable to look at her work with anything other than a critical eye. “When it comes to art, there’s always something I can improve,” she says. “I want to constantly be better and constantly learn.” As she begins her college career at Texas State University, the 18-year-old knows she’ll need to maintain this attitude if she’s to thrive in the world of graphic design, a practical area of study that will allow her to continue in her art while preparing her for a stable career. Storch also plans to follow the examples set by her parents, Charles Storch and Senior Accounting Specialist Katrina Storch, who through their own strengths and interests, have prepared their daughter for great things. “As a bookkeeper, my mother has always been very strict with money. She also insists that we eat balanced, home-cooked meals every day,” Storch says. “My father is an excellent handyman and is great with animals. I’ve been very lucky. They really are great parents.” ▼ Sarah Storch with her parents, Charles and Katrina Storch.
