Led by Plant Manager Steven Smith, the team at the Central Texas Aggregates District operation continues a year of great success; in the spring, the site received its second consecutive Diamond Honor Award. “This team is highly focused on actively engaging in upstream activities,” said Central Texas Aggregates District Regional Vice President-General Manager Chance Allen. “Their commitment to participating in behaviorbased safety while working diligently to make safety improvements has provided a clear path to success.” Silver-level NSSGA safety winners include Helotes Quarry in Texas, Cedarville Quarry in Ohio, 3 Bells Sand & Gravel in Colorado, and New Harvey Sand and Linn County Sand in Iowa. All won in the small quarry category. North Carolina’s Onslow Quarry won silver among medium-sized operations. Bronze-level winners among medium-sized operations include Benson, Statesville and Mallard Creek quarries in North Carolina, San Pedro Quarry in Texas and North Indianapolis Mine in Indiana. Stamper Mine in Missouri was a bronze winner in the large quarry category. The NSSGA’s Safety Excellence Awards were created in 1987 to promote safe working conditions and practices and to annually honor individual operations with exemplary safety records among member companies. The awards recognize individual operations that have gone the longest duration without a reportable injury in their size category, based on data provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Gold awards were presented at the NSSGA’s Legislative & Policy Forum/Fall Board Meeting in Washington, D.C., in late September. ▼
