Every employee not joining gives
the school board some hope that
some unit members aren’t behind
the negotiating team. That can hurt
everyone. It can mean the difference
between an agreement reached
reasonably and a possible impasse
or strike while the board tests the

unity of the staff. The same result
can happen on a state level when
your state association lobbies for
school funding, better facilities, and
improved professional development
opportunities. In short, we’re all in
this together and the decision of one
person to stay out of the organization
has an impact on every school,
every employee, and every child.
