Prayer, called when George Washington was President, asked
the people to “confess our sins…through the merits and
mediation of Jesus Christ, our Savior” and to pray for God “to

1780 Hancock Thanksgiving Proclamation
Hancock called this Day of Thanksgiving after God saved George
Washington’s life from the murderous plans of traitor Benedict Arnold.
Hancock directly credits God with preserving America’s liberties by

1792 Hancock Fasting Proclamation
In this proclamation for Fasting, Humiliation, and Prayer, Hancock
urged citizens to seek “forgiveness through the merits and mediation
of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior,” and further pray that God
would “endue the people with the spirit of truth, harmony, and
concord…to the advancement of the Redeemer’s kingdom.” 13"%19"
