PAWLEYS ISLAND
According to many historians, Pawleys Island is the oldest island vacation
destination in the country. Locals have nicknamed it “Arrogantly Shabby” for
its barefoot, carefree, laid back atmosphere. The island is only four miles long,
and at most, a quarter of a mile wide. Accessible from the mainland by two
short causeways, there is a single row of homes located along the oceanfront
Mid-island and along the South end. The North end and the Birds Nest section
are wide enough for 2nd row, off-ocean and creekfront homes. There are three
public boat landings, two on the North End, and one in the Birds Nest and the
public boardwalks to the beach are marked. (map pg. 27)
