Saenger Theatre Brings Award-winning Broadway
Musical to New Orleans
The King and I, the second production of the East
Jefferson General Hospital Broadway in New Orleans
2017-18 season, brings the exotic, 1860s court of the
King of Siam to the stage of the Saenger Theatre
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s
multi-award-winning
musical opens for a
six-day run on Tuesday,
November 14 and wraps
on Sunday the 19th. A
total of eight shows are
being offered at various
times, including a matinee
on closing day.
The King and I features
a score that boasts such
Broadway classics as
“Getting To Know You,”
“Hello Young Lovers,”
“Shall We Dance,”
“I Whistle a Happy
Tune” and “Something
Wonderful.” The musical
tells the story of the
unconventional and
tempestuous relationship
that develops between
King Mongkut and Anna
Leonowens, a British
schoolteacher who the
king brings to Bangkok to
teach his many wives and
children.
The lavish production,
directed by Tony Awardwinner
Bartlett Sher,
stars Jose Llana and
Laura Michelle Kelly in the title roles and features
choreography by Christopher Gattelli, based on the
original choreography by Jerome Robbins.

Production
An American in Paris, the most awarded new musical
of 2015 and winner of four Tony Awards, will open in
New Orleans at the Saenger Theatre for a one-week
engagement on January 30, 2018, and run through
February 4. Presented by the New Orleans Theatre
Association, An American in Paris is part of the East
Jefferson General Hospital Broadway in New Orleans
2017-2018 season.
musical is the romantic story about an American
soldier, a mysterious French girl, and an indomitable
European city, each yearning for a new beginning in
the aftermath of war. Directed and choreographed by
2015 Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon, the
show features the music and lyrics of George and Ira
Gershwin and a book by Craig Lucas.
The score of An American in Paris includes such
familiar show tunes as “I Got Rhythm,” “Liza,” “’S
Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” “I'll Build a Stairway to
Paradise,” and some of the best orchestral music ever
put into notes by American composers, including the
melodic title track.
