Anita Hoy is
Living Her Dream
Many know her as the owner and dance instructor
at Helen’s Baton and Dance but do not know that
she has been a dance instructor by night and a
massage therapist by day working for local doctors
and therapists. Six months ago that changed as she
opened up her own massage therapy business.
Mandala Massage, located at 6132 Fort King Rd.,
two doors up from the dance studio, is Hoy’s new
office. Hoy bought the former thrift shop and
renovated it herself. The result shows that if she
is as good a massage therapist as she is interior
renovator and decorator, she is going to make a lot
of people feel much better.
Hoy has been a massage therapist for 18 years. She
got her first massage at the age of seven and she
thought it was great and developed an interest in
it. Her involvement in sports and dance kept her a
believer in massage. She still gets a massage twice
a month.
“It’s scary going into business for yourself when
you have a husband and two kids and you can’t
just drop everything and live your dream,” Hoy
said. “but, I decided to give it a try and luckily it
has been working out pretty good so far”. After
Hoy opened in May, she went to work on the
building. She painted inside and out, added new
flooring and furniture. “My husband is an artist
and supplied all of the artwork. We gave it a
relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.”
Mandala Massage offers a variety of massage
services including facials and waxing. “My
background in massage is therapeutic massage,”
Hoy said. “A lot of my clientele suffer from neck
pain, back pain, sciatica, migraine headaches, and
fibromyalgia so my specialty is working on people
for therapeutic reasons.”
The practice also does reflexology, which addresses
foot pain or swelling and is also good for diabetics
with foot issues. Relaxation massage is another
choice for those who have tension and pain or
numbness from being a desk jockey or who just
need to relax.
Massage rates are $35 for a half-hour, $60 for
an hour, and $90 for an hour-and-a-half and a
first-time visit merits $5 off. The time you choose
determines how many areas of the body may be
worked on – a half-hour will usually be time to
work on only one area.
“You have to pick what you want,” Hoy said. “You
can’t work on all of the ailments that you have.
Oftentimes if someone has a sore neck or headache
they will do a half-hour on just that area, but once
that person sees the benefit of it and then try the
hour-long session where we can do the neck, the
shoulders, the back, the legs, and the feet - nine
times out of ten they stay with the hour session.”
