Penske Acura Team Leads Impressive
List of Prototypes Heading to Sebring in 2018
Acura Motorsports has announced a twocar
effort in association with Team Penske.
The legendary race team will campaign
a pair of Acura ARX-05 prototypes, with
Acura joining Cadillac, Mazda and Nissan in
the WeatherTech Championship Prototype
class. Testing of the Acura prototype is
underway with the team already making test
endurance runs at Sebring.
Team Penske last competed in IMSA from
2005-09, winning P2 class championships
in the American Le Mans Series between
2006 and 2008, winning the Sebring
12-hour classic in 2008.
The Daytona Prototype International (DPi)
platform – which debuted in 2017 – allows
for cars in the Prototype class to be powered
by a wide range of engines from the world’s
leading automobile manufacturers and features manufacturer-specific
bodywork and styling cues.
“Roger Penske is already an important part of the Acura family as
one of our great Acura dealers, and now it is a thrill to have him as
part of the Acura Motorsports family as well,” said Jon Ikeda, Acura
senior vice president and general manager. “We look forward to
building on the success of the race-winning NSX GT3 program,
and couldn’t be more thrilled to return to the prototype category
of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with a partner like
Team Penske.”
Also announced is the return of the legendary Joest team, which
will take over the Mazda DPi program beginning in 2018. Joest,
one of the most successful teams in endurance sports car racing is
returning as “Mazda Team Joest” to become its new factory Mazda
Prototype team.
The Penske Team will field two Acura prototypes at Sebring on March 17th with an all-star
lineup of drivers that includes Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya.
The announcement brings Joest Racing – which has amassed 16
victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 10 victories in the Mobil
1 Twelve Hours of Sebring– back to top-level endurance sports car
racing. The team created in 1978 by Reinhold Joest most recently
operated the Audi factory prototype team from 1999 through 2016.
