THE TWELVE
DOGS OF
CHRISTMAS
By David Rosenfelt
When I ran across this book I thought, judging by the title and front
cover only, that it would be a cute little book to get us in the mood for
Christmas. Boy, was I in for a surprise! Yes, there are twelve dogs and
it’s around Christmas time, but that’s about the only references to the
title that you’ll find. It turned out to be a very cleverly written murder
mystery (my fav), full of surprises right up to the very end.
Martha “Pups” Boyer takes care of stray puppies until they’re old
enough to be adopted out to good homes. When a neighbor of Pups
reports her to the city for having too many pets in her home, she calls
her good friend and defense lawyer, Andy Carpenter, to help her out.
Andy feels confident that Pups case will be dismissed, after all, who
would punish someone for rescuing puppies, especially at Christmas
time?
But things get complicated when Randy Hennessey, the complaining
neighbor, turns up dead and Pups is seen leaving the scene of the crime.
It also doesn’t help that she threatened Hennessey with his life, in front
of witnesses no less. Andy suddenly finds himself with a murder case
on his hands. Of course, he’s sure Pups is innocent, but how does he
prove it? He and his quirky group of associates set out to find the truth
and free Pups before it’s too late.
The clever plot of the story is engaging from the very first pages.
Andy Carpenter (who is apparently a recurring character) is laughout
loud funny with his never-ending sarcasm. All of the characters,
especially Pups, feed right into the humor of the situation. The story
will keep you guessing right up to the final pages until you finally find
out who the killer is and just what the heck is going on. This is a quick
read because you won’t be able to put it down. It definitely deserves 5
roses! So maybe it’s not a sappy Christmas story, but well worth the
read nevertheless, which is a good thing because I have been accused
of reviewing “chick books” (right Jerry?) and this one should appeal to
anyone, no matter the gender!
So, until next year, have a wonderful Christmas and read a book, it it’s
a good read, pass it on!
