in the aernoon, the game was close as both teams were
hunng for their rst win of the tournament. n the end Finland
emerged victorious with the nal scoring being 3-1. n the evening,
the most ancipated matchup of the tournament thus far
began when the puck dropped for the start of USA vs. anada.
The game marked the third meeng the season between the
U.S. and anada. The last me the two teams played each other
in the Four Naons up was Nov. , 2016 in Finland; the US defeated
anada -3 to win the tournament. Since falling to anada
in T during the 2014 lympics, the USWNT had played anada
in 6 internaonal events, winning of the 6 tles and 9 of the
12 games. verall, the US had won 10 of the 16 games against
anada since the Sochi lympics.
The game opened with ecing puck bales, speed and
physicality. Each team took advantage of any oensive one me
earned, especially on the power play. The U.S. opened the scoring
on the power play when arnes scored her second goal of her
short career with the USWNT. Aer eecve penalty killing the
U.S. made the game 2-0 aer Megan oek scored, causing anada
to push back into the U.S. one and giving the end to the rst
period an ecing nish. Numerous penales at the end of the
rst period and during the second period gave anada the ability
to pull within one goal aer ebecca ohnson scored. The rest
of the second period became a goaltending clinic by U.S. goalie
Maddie ooney and anada goalie Ann-enee Desbiens making
spectacular saves for their respecve teams.
The third period immediately saw the U.S. convert on another
power play opportunity, the goal was scored by endall oyne
aer Desbiens was caught out of her net. anada responded by
scoring a short-handed goal but the celebraon was short lived,
Ale arpenter tallied the fourth goal of the night for the U.S. and
that would be the nal result 4-2 U.S. who also outshot anada
30-22.
Aer the game ooney talked about the numerous penal-
es accumulated during the game, “We had a lot of penales
this game but thankfully our penalty kill was great, they really
helped me on rebounds, clearing the puck and icing it when we
needed to. ensively we capitalied on our chances, it was a
great defensive game and we played from the net out so it was
awesome.”
Hilary night, who won lympic medals in 2010 and 2014
with Team USA, also gave her thoughts aer the game on the
team’s rst matchup against anada, “ was really happy overall
with how the team played tonight, there were some ups and
downs with the special teams but those can somemes be games
where it is dicult to perform on the level that you need to but
thought we did a good job at staying focused and making sure
