FIRST: SAFETY
Company Eyes the Future While Celebrating
its Safest Year Ever
Posters like this were dispersed
throughout the Southwest and Cement
& Southwest Ready Mix divisions as
part of the Step Safely rollout in June.

With 2017 in the books, leaders
across Martin Marietta are basking
in what was the company’s safest
year on record. Still, no one is losing sight
of the ultimate goal: ZERO incidents.
Vice President of Safety and Health
Michael Hunt said safety numbers
improved almost universally with the
company’s total injury incident rate (TIIR)
reaching 1.07, a marked improvement over
the 1.32 tallied at the end of 2016. The
overall lost-time incident rate (LTIR) also
improved, reaching a record of 0.13 – down
from 0.28 a year earlier.
“We’re proud of our employees. They’re
the ones who made this happen day in and
day out,” Hunt said. “Without their dedication,
adherence to safe work practices
and willingness to make safety a personal
value, none of this would be possible. We’re
truly appreciative of their commitment to
our Guardian Angel safety culture and its
Wingman principles.”
Crediting a “great culture with high expectations,”
Hunt said there was no magic
bullet responsible for the company’s 2017
performance. Rather, it was a combination
of various initiatives that each contributed
uniquely to the cause.
Companywide since 2015, the Guardian
Angel safety program reached a new level
of maturity last year and continued to
effectively spread across Martin Marietta.
A new Safety Audit Team also crossed the
company, offering customized, detailed
safety culture assessments to more than
30 operations. Numerous campaigns continued
or were kicked off to target specific
types of potential on-the-job injuries.
Other initiatives aimed to increase hazard
recognition and encourage decision-based
safety practices.
In Texas, Director of Logistics and
Operations Support Steven Schaefer
spearheaded a task force created to
eliminate slips, trips and falls across the
Southwest and Cement & Southwest Ready
Mix divisions. The result – the Step Safely
campaign – was rolled out in June. Though
the initiative required employees to undergo
additional safety training, Schaefer
said all were receptive to the message.
“Overall, the feedback we received was
very positive,” he said. “Slips, trips and
falls can cause some very serious injuries,
so everyone understands that talking
about them is really important.”
Schaefer said personnel across the two
divisions will continue with the campaign
in 2018 while keeping an eye out for the
next opportunity to increase safety.
Another aspect of safety where great
strides were taken in 2017 – an area
where work will continue this year and
beyond – was the practice of mentoring.
Hunt said areas like the North Texas/
Oklahoma District, which had previously
established an effective mentoring
program, continued efforts last year while
several other districts across numerous
divisions formalized similar programs.
North Texas/Oklahoma District Safety
Manager Stephanie Duran said her
district’s program started in August 2013
and has spread to other operations in
Texas, Arkansas and elsewhere. Moving
forward, she expects such programs will
effectively help Martin Marietta’s safety
message spread.
“These programs allow us to further
develop employees by training them to be
mentors,” she said. “As mentors, they’re
then empowered to further strengthen
our Guardian Angel culture in the hearts
and minds of our new employees. These
programs really do prepare all of our people
for success.” ▼
