LEARN TO MAKE: A SCARF
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
A B
Section off a piece of an old scarf or scrap silk fabric. We will
need a 9” square.
On a piece of paper measuring 11” x 14”, draw a 9” square,
bringing the lines beyond each intersecting corner.
We will use this paper to provide a base when cutting our silk
since it is a slick fabric that tends to shift.
C D
Place the silk scarf, right side up, on top of the paper. The
two finished ends of the scarf should be lined up along the 2
edges of the square. Secure the 2 finished edges with tape,
then smooth the fabric across. The unfinished ends should be
at least 1⁄4” beyond the 9” square you drew (ours is 1⁄2”).
If you have more than 1/2” of excess on either side, trim to a
1/2”, cutting through the paper below.
E F
Now, begin to pull the threads along one edge until you’ve
pulled all the threads up to the line you drew on the paper.
NOTE: It is helpful if the grain of your fabric is close to
parallel with the drawn line (ours was close, but not perfect).
Continue to pull threads on the other side in the same manner
until you reach the drawn line below (indicated in white).
