THE BASICS
SHARP (MICROTEX) NEEDLES
The acute tip on this slim needle design is revered for its ability
to create perfectly straight stitch lines, as well as being ideal
for piecing quilts together. Used similarly to a universal needle,
sharps come in a variety of sizes, making it a great needle in
a embroiderer’s arselnal. Keep these on hand for projecrts
requiring precision or involving quilted layers for the best results.
SIZES: 60/8 - 110/18
INSIDER INFO: These needles are ideal for passing through a
variety of materials like silk to tougher options like vinyl and
faux leathers -- just remember to use the smallest size!
GOLD TITANIUM NEEDLES
Featuring a slightly rounded point, these may stitch similar to
your universal needles, but you may notice one difference: they
are covered in a Titanium Nitride coating, which aids in resisting
adhesives on materials, improves the lifespan of your needle, and
easily penetrates most dense fabrics with minimal friction.
SIZES: 75/11 and 90/14
INSIDER INFO: These needles are often seen in use for
Stephen Wilson’s fine artwork when working with stiff boxes
or specialty pieces that require more delicate threads like
cotton or metallics.
UNIVERSAL NEEDLES
As the name implies, these needles are best for a large variety
of fabrics and projects. At Anita Goodesign, this is the needle we
reach for when creating our designs. The slightly rounded point
safely passes through most fabrics and is our go-to choice for our
embroidery and sewing projects.
SIZES: 60/8 - 120/19 (with 75/11 being most common)
TOP TIP: If using a heavier weight fabric than your standard
cottons or appliqué material, consider switching to a needle
to match. For example, opt for using a denim needle when
embroidering on jeans or thick chambray.
The best rule to follow when choosing the needle for your next project is remembering
less is more! Once you have determined your fabric choices and type of embroidery or
sewing work needed, always opt for the smallest needle size that the fabric is suited for.
