FUSSY CUTTING
APPLIQUÉ
You may be familiar with Fussy Cutting
as a term used in quilting, but this fun
technique can be used as appliqué
too. This technique is used to isolate a
certain area, detail or image on a fabric
to serve as a focal point .
We used the same technique in a few
of the Dear Santa Designs, specifically
for the stamp appliqué. The finishing
stitches of the appliqués provide an
instant frame for the fabrics we decided
to use.
When choosing a fabric for a fussy cut
appliqué, it is ideal to choose one that
has a design or print with some form of
object or feature that will draw the
eye in.
In order to successfully cut your fabric
out, determine the size of the appliqué
first by measuring the placement
stitches. Then measure and mark this
on your fabric choice and add 1/2” on
all sides. Using tracing paper is a great
alternative to position the piece of
fabric you want.
Keep in mind the point of fussy cutting
is to selectively choose what is featured
in the appliqué with only your fabric
choice since this appliqué does not
contain any decorative embroidery.
Have fun and get creative! Cut a few
pieces of your favorite festive print,
then play around to see which one
looks best!
