HAND-PAINTED
HISTORY
The creation of quilt block patterns painted
along barn sides has been around for
centuries, but it was not until recently that
barn quilts have become a more common
sight in the countryside!
Back in the early 2000s, a contemporary
Ohio quilter by the name of Donna
Sue Groves wished to create a block
to honor her mother, Maxine, as
well as her Appalachian heritage.
She set to work to create a large,
painted quilt block—inspired by
those seen on Dutch barns
across Pennsylvania—to hang
on the side of her barn for

all to see. Her idea quickly caught on to
the surrounding quilting enthusiasts, and a
community-wide movement began with barn
quilts popping up along the countryside, all
located on a mapped trail for passersby to
spot on their journeys!
Now, you can honor the history of barn quilts
by stitching these stunning rural scenes
on throw pillows, garden flags, jackets, or
even merged onto quilt blocks. However
you choose to display them, these Barn
Quilt designs are sure to brighten up the
mundane!
