Typography Tote
Step-by-Step Instructions
NOTE: If you are wanting to stitch just the design without the steps for adding it to a bag, hoop a piece of tear away
stabilizer and the base fabric of your choice and follow the steps below lettered H - N, trimming the end project as needed.
A B
To create your Typography Tote, you will need to find a large bag,
preferably of denim or canvas material to hold up to the stitched
design. Our tote bag was purchased from AllAboutBlanks.com,
and consists of a blue, distressed cotton canvas material.
Use a seam ripper to carefully open up the side seams of the tote
bag. If your bag has a lining in the way of the outer material like
ours, open up the liner to roll it out of the way, securing with tape.
The side without the lining rolled up will be our bag’s “front.”
C D
Now, hoop a piece of sticky back stabilizer with the paper surface
facing up. Use your seam ripper to gently score an X into the
paper topping.
Using the tip of the seam ripper, catch the edge of the paper
topping from the center and tear away it away. Remove all the
paper topping to expose the sticky surface within the hoop.
E F
Take a marker and a ruler and draw the intersecting lines on the
hoop’s middle points to identify the center, as shown above.
Working with the “front” side of your tote, fold the front panel in
half, with right sides coming together, then fold once more into
quarters to find the center. Line up the center point you created
with a drawn quadrant on your hoop, as shown above. Begin to
unfold the bag and smooth it across the sticky stabilizer.
