choosing the right border width
There are 3 border width sizes to choose from for border pieces: a 2” border, a 4” border,
and an 8” border block. There are also scallop and square corner blocks to help finish off
the desired shape for your new quilt.
The size and layout of your quilt will help best determine what border blocks to use, but here
are a few quick references for ways to lay out your quilt and border pieces based on your
main block and sashing sizes.

8x8
main block
For a quilt top using 8x12 main
blocks and a 2x8” sashing block,
your border blocks can combine in a
few different ways.
A variety of border widths can be
used for this type of layout. What
you will want to focus on is which
combination of border widths can
be used to total up to 12”. This is
because we are using the 8x12 main
blocks and we need to use enough
border widths that will equal up to
that 12” on the one side of the 8x12
main blocks. In this case, we used
both the 4” and 8” width borders.
Keep in mind other combinations will
work as well.

4x8 sashing
For quilts using square 8x8 main blocks and a
4x8” sashing, the 8” border paired with the 4”
border will correctly match the block widths.
The corner pieces can be swapped for a square
or scalloped shape depending on the look you
are trying to create.
