PAINT WITH ALL THE COLORS OF THE WIND.
Choosing the correct paints for this project is important. You can
just use one color of paint for your watercolor, but where’s the
fun in that? Take a look at the color wheel to decide what colors
you want to combine! Just remember, less is more! Try to only
mixing two or three colors, and be mindful of what colors you mix!
Complementary colors look great side by side, but when mixed
together, they create desaturated gray colors.
A good formula to follow is to mix two primary colors that create
a secondary color. For example, we chose red and yellow, which
mixed together to create varying shades of orange and coral. Try
mixing blue with yellow to create greens and teals, or red with
blue to make violets.
Unsure of your color combinations? Remember practice makes
perfect! You can try painting on some watercolor paper first to
get a feel for the colors you want to blend together, as well as
practice your technique! Have fun and play to see what fun things
you can create!
Of course, water is your best friend when you’re watercolor painting! Keep in mind that the more
water you add, the less opaque the color will be. A great technique to make colors blend together
perfectly is the “wet on wet” method. First, saturate the area of fabric that you want to paint with plain
water, then with some paint that has been slightly watered down, start blocking in color over the wet
areas (hence wet on wet!). You can change paint colors and start blocking in a new color, blending
the two with your paint brush where they meet! Another way to blend the colors is mixing them
together on your palette, then painting directly onto your fabric as well.
