Stitching Out P hotography Designs
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
To embroider over a surface as delicate as paper, the material you use will make a
significant difference. Just as with fine art, you will want to treat your own creations
as such by providing an optimal base paper for the embroidered stitches. For Wilson's
art, he often selects high quality, acid-free paper, with the Hahnemühle brand being
his current source. Now, you too can replicate his quality print-outs with the images
provided in this series.
Archival grade paper will produce the best results, and can likely be found at your
preferred local printing shop. Each image will come full color in two size options: 7.75"
x 7.75" and 9.75" x 9.75". To make printing these high-quality images easier, there is
also a poster series of all the images in groupings, with options of 18" x 24" as well as
24" x 36", allowing you to bring one file with multiple images to your local print shop
for processing at one time. Simply cut the images out along the red lines on any of the
printed photography images to trim them down to scale for use in your embroidery hoop.
It is important to also note the orientation of the embroidered file that goes on your
chosen background—be sure when placing the printed image that the embroidered file
will be stitching in the correct direction and lines up appropriately.
Experiment with the types of threads you use on these photography images. From
standard polyester to matte or even wool threads, new looks can be obtained with the
same photograph by simply swapping your embroidery medium.
