Folded Fabric Backgrounds
INTRICATE FOLD PATTERNS MADE EASY
Aside from embroidery stitches, fabric is a wonderful component to create a
unique look to your art installations. Folded fabric is a common technique
that has been incorporated in the quilting process since its early beginnings.
Through his digitizing work for Anita Goodesign, Wilson created a simplified
process for mimicking the intricate folds seen in traditional quilting patterns,
providing home embroiderers a placement stitch indicating the fabric's
designated space, a folding stitch to create a clean edge, and a tacking stitch to
secure the material within the design. This simple, three-step process is then
repeated for various layers of material types, creating an intricate play of color
and texture in the finished works.
The folded fabric backgrounds included in this series provide the perfect fabric
foundation to use in conjunction with other techniques. Time-honored patterns
such as flying geese and log cabin quilt blocks have been recreated in these
stunning arrangements, fashioning the perfect base for additional elements to
be added over top, or can even be used as an appliqué material itself.
