Making a Folded Fabric Background
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Fabric has a stunning way of bringing multiple pieces together, or even helping
select design elements stand out over others. Careful consideration is taken in
Wilson's studio for the material types, colors, and even quantities seen throughout
his pieces, and this same cogitation was used in selecting the fabrics shown in the
works to come.
Wilson divulged his preference for keeping folded fabric pieces in a more
monochromatic color scheme, working with various hues of individual shades to
create depth to the folded fabric works. For the pieces selected in this series, a main
color was chosen for each fold pattern, with fabrics of lighter and darker values
added in for visual interest. These folded fabric "blocks" can then be used as the
base for showcasing other techniques in this series like the dimensional butterflies
or lace flowers. With beautiful patterns created in the fabrics, these stunning quilt
blocks can be presented on their own or can even act as the appliqué fabric in
techniques like the silhouettes.
