UNIQUE MATERIALS TO EXPLORE
Adding elements over top of the folded fabric layers or even the embroidered and printed
backgrounds are wonderful ways to tie in colors from various pieces into one cohesive
presentation. However, your options don't stop there for mounting and adding on
dimensional elements. Just as with Wilson's exploration of mediums, don't shy away
from trying new or unique background options. Wilson has recently experimented in
using vintage wallpapers and even colored card stocks as the backgrounds for several
of his own artistic works. Wallpaper, which can easily be purchased in rolls, as well as
card stock or even a luxe new fabric can add a whole new look to an individual piece
as well as aid in balancing the color story being presented in the finished works.
If you choose to create your background for a Toile design using one of these mediums,
it is as easy as stitching through the material. Simply pick up on step B from the
lettered steps in the Toile & Sketch Work section in order to lay your background
material of choice and tack it in place. As you continue through the techniques in this
series, don't forget that you can change your background for various elements to give
them an entirely different look and feel.
