Lace Flowers
TINY BLOOMS FOR A BIG IMPACT
Freestanding lace is a technique that has been used for well over a decade at Anita
Goodesign. However, its popularity generally wavers between adoration and average
acceptance, with dozens of design companies producing lace designs one year, and very
few of them the next year. Wilson’s theory behind this change? The apparent limitations
of lace encourage its use to fall somewhere between ornaments, decorative trims or
simplistic projects.
For Wilson, practicing a technique with new intent has always been a source of
intrigue. Naturally, Stephen wanted to showcase lace in an entirely new manner,
thereby redefining its simplistic association. Now, thousands of freestanding flowers
have been embroidered in dozens of colorways, dried, and affixed to other embroidered
elements for further artistic effect. Lace began to appear in his studio works anywhere
it was possible: flowers added over 3D printed skulls, and other more commonplace
objects like bricks and long board decks got a makeover in the dainty embroidered
daisies. The softness of the embroidery in combination with the rigidity of sculpture
resulted in magic. This section of the series will highlight Wilson’s use of these included
embroidered flowers, and how they can be added to a multitude of shapes to create
larger, more intricate pieces.
