Dimensional Mounting
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
If opting to use a shadowbox frame, your pieces will require dimensional mounting
instructions. Similar to the flat frame mounting, you will want to add your art pieces
over top of a piece of mat board for presentation in the frame and adding durability to
the finished piece. By elevating the artwork on the mat board, Wilson notes “The artwork
seems to breathe more and look much more dimensional.”
Just as with the flat mounts, your embroidered works will require a trim of the excess
material around the design. Wilson uses scissors or a rotary cutter to provide a straight
cut, while allowing the raw, unfinished edges to only add to the artistic touch of the
finished piece. “Showing the imperfections in the work makes the art piece artistic. If
there are a few loose threads hanging over the edge, even better,” he notes. No matter
the framing style chosen for your finished works, always be sure to mount the final piece
on a sturdy background. Wilson often chooses a coordinating piece of foam core to glue
onto the back of the embroidered works before the final framing. The foam core, which
is essentially a piece of foam between two pieces of card stock, will need to be trimmed to
about a ½” smaller than your finished piece. Once glued and mounted to this foam core,
the embroidered piece will then sit over top of the mat board within the frame, elevating
your embroidery to give it a subtle “floating” effect.
