A. To begin, select the desired
tapestry for your tray
background. As this will be
the inside of your tray, we
suggest a color palette that
pops against a neutral outer
frame. The chosen design is
tapestry-10.
B. Determine the desired
placement of your frame and
handles. We selected a frame
2" larger than our tapestry,
and used 5" handles. Measure
to center the handles on each
side of the frame; and pre-drill
holes for the screws.
C. Carefully remove the backing
and the glass from the frame
so that you can use it as
a template for cutting the
tapestry to the correct size.
D. Center the tapestry under the
frame's glass and trim away
excess material with a rotary
cutter., leaving about a ¼" or
less remaining.
E. To create a clean finish within
the frame, you will bind the
edges of the tapestry. Cut
2" wide strips of fabric, long
enough to go around the
perimeter of the tapestry, plus
a few extra inches. We cut 46."
F. Place the binding strip along
the tapestry's bottom edge as
shown, making sure the strip
and tapestry are facing right
sides together. Fold the end
back to create a 45 degree
angle and pin the fold in place.
G. Using your sewing machine
and a matching or clear
thread, sew the binding strip
onto the tapestry. Using a ¼"
seam allowance, stop stitching
¼" from the end of the block.
H. Now, lift the presser foot and
pivot the block 45 degrees so
that you will stitch straight
through to the corner and off
the edge of the block.
I. Fold the binding back on
itself as shown, perpendicular
to the seam you have just
stitched.
