DALA HORSES | PROJECTS COLLECTION | 47
We’re not horsin’
around!
The original Dala horses were (and
still are) carved from sturdy wood and
hand painted by artisans in Sweden.
We needed to figure out a way to
translate their practice into our art
form of embroidery! We decided to
craft our version into stuffed horses
that can stand up just like the original.
These plush ponies make wonderful
gifts for a child, but the designs are still
intricate and modern enough to serve
as statement pieces to any home decor.
Create some as the perfect gift for a
friend or family member in touch with
their Swedish roots, or make one for
yourself and display it on your mantel or
tabletop for a cheery pop of color!
Crafted in only two hoopings, we made
the construction as simple as possible.
The first half of the horse will be stitched
out in the first hooping, followed by its
mirrored image in a second hooping.
You’ll then attach the first half of horse in
the second hooping. From there, simply
remove it from the hoop and stuff your
new horse with Polyfil. Since they look
more complicated than they are, you’ll
have your friends amazed when you tell
them you made it yourself!
