Attaching the Binding
STEP- BY- STEP
A B
Now that your quilt top is finished, the final steps are binding
the quilt. First, you’ll need to prepare your binding strips.
Measure the perimeter of your quilt, then add 4-6”, and you
will have your binding length. For example, our quilt perimeter
was 136”, so with 6” added, the Binding Length was 142”.
C D
To attach your strips, first place two strip ends right side
together as shown above. Pin in place.
E F
Trim the excess fabric from the seam, leaving only 1⁄2”
allowance.
Then, you can determine the number of strips you’ll need
using the following formula: Binding Length ÷ Binding Fabric
Width = # Binding Strips. So ours was 142” ÷ 43” = 3.3 strips,
which we rounded up to 4. Then, just cut your binding strips
to 2 1⁄2” wide.
NOTE: Binding Fabric Width is the width of your bolt or
piece of fabric you’re using for you binding.
Then, sew the two strips together at a 45˚ angle.
Press open the seam, repeat to attach the rest of the binding
strips together.
