Lay your base fabric right-side up over the placement stitch,
covering all four sides.

Use a pair of scissors to trim away the excess fabric from the
tacking stitch.

Run the stippling of the quilt block, then the placement stitch
of your first appliqué. For stippling, we recommend using
a thread color that matches your base fabric so as not to
detract from the overall design.
Then, run the tacking stitch to secure the base fabric.
Your trimmed base fabric should look something like this.
Lay your appliqué fabric right-side up over the placement
stitch, making sure to cover the stitches on all sides.
