border piece.
Use scissors to trim away the excess fabric, cutting close
to the tacking stitch line on all sides. Once trimmed, your
appliqué should look something like this.

decorative embroidery.
Lay your fabric strip right-side down, overlapping the inner
edge of the placement stitch by at least 1⁄8”, as shown.
