Once trimmed, your batting should look like this.

Place a piece of base fabric right side facing up, over the
batting. NOTE: Be sure that the base fabric extends over
all four sides of the batting by at least 1⁄2”. This will be the
seam allowance used to piece the quilt blocks together.
Run the next machine step, which is the tacking stitch that
secures the base fabric to the design.
NOTE: For this step, we use embroidery thread that
matches the base fabric.
Use a pair of scissors to trim away the excess batting up to
the batting’s tacking stitch.
