JESSICA
MALONEY
Lead Graphic Designer
E ach month, you open up your shiny new All Access book
sent to you from Anita Goodesign. As you look through
each issue, have you ever wondered how we put it all
together? How do we get such detailed images of each
design, as if they are literally stitched out on the glossy
pages you see before you? A big part of this answer is our
Lead Graphic Designer, Jessica Maloney. This month, we sat
down with her and asked some questions (both personal and
professional), to give you a glimpse into the role that Jessica
plays in the process as one of the many detail-oriented
Design Professionals in the Anita family.
What career did you envision for yourself when you were
growing up? Well, in fourth grade, I thought I wanted to be
a Marine Biologist. But then we went on a field trip where we
watched someone dissect a fish and I quickly ruled that out!
Growing up, I was always very crafty. I asked my parents to
buy me just about every Klutz book I could get my hands on
so that I could make beaded hair pins, friendship bracelets,
sand bottles, and so much more. In high school, I spent a
month studying abroad at a program in Oxford, England. I
took classes on Art and Photography. I don’t think I realized
I had a talent for taking pictures until that experience. That’s
really where I fell in love with the camera and decided,
no matter what I did, there was going to be picture-taking
involved. In fact, I went to the School of Visual Arts in NYC to
get my Masters in Photo, Video & Related Media because I
love Photography that much!
How did you get into graphic design? I went to Lehigh
University in Bethlehem, PA, where I double majored in
Graphic Design and Studio Art (Photography), with a minor in
Theatre. When I first got to Lehigh, I wasn’t sure what I wanted
to study. I just knew that it was going to be something creative.
From my very first Design Foundations course, I knew I was
going to be a designer. I loved studying composition, color,
and typography. I also really loved organizing information, so
magazine layouts are definitely up my alley!
What does a typical work day look like for you? I start my
day with a cup of English Breakfast tea and a to-do list! Each
day looks different depending on where we are in the month.
I hand out assignments to each member of my team based on
what is highest priority. This could include photographing and
isolating stitch-outs, designing collection tutorials, or creating
advertisements for our Marketing Department to send out via
email and social media. I also work directly with our Creative
Department and Art Director to design custom templates
for our large releases. These are so much fun because we
really do start from scratch every time! I also make assets for
videos, design logos and branding for upcoming projects,
and put the entire All Access book together every month.
