SCISSORS
to have in your sewing room
For Anita Goodesign, good cutting tools are crucial! Whether it’s the typical double-curved appliqué
scissors, shears, duck bill scissors, or even snips, we use a variety of cutting tools in different scenarios.
We order our scissors wholesale directly from Gingher or Gunold, but many third-party retailers carry
these brands too. Below, we walk you through each type of scissors that we use and why we love them.
1 DoubleCurved Appliqué Scissors
The first pair of scissors would definitely be Anita’s most
used! Double-curved tip appliqué scissors feature skinny
blades and fine points that curve up at the tip. In general, the
shape of these scissors best allows you to cut flush with the
fabrics, making any project that is still hooped easier to trim!
BONUS TIP: Aside from curved-tip scissors, there are snips
that feature a curved-tip, while also being spring-loaded,
which can be easier on your hand if you do a lot of small
appliqué cutting.
2 Duck Bill Appliqué Scissors
Duck bill scissors are also commonly used with appliqués
or for cutting the top layer of a multi-layered item. Their
unique, bill-like shape usually measures around a 1⁄2” in width,
allowing you to only trim what you are wanting to cut, without
getting any base fabric or other materials by mistake.
This particular scissor type is also great for reducing bulk in
your seams once you begin to piece your blocks together.
Easily slide the “duck bill” blade under the material you want
to cut, blocking the scissors from trimming anything below it!
