Once trimmed, your batting should look something like this.

With right side up, place a layer of base fabric over the
batting, being sure that the edges of the base fabric extend
past the batting by at least 1⁄2” to act as a seam allowance.
Run the tacking stitch for the base fabric. Do not trim the
base fabric. The excess 1⁄2” is needed for a seam allowance.
Use a pair of scissors to trim away the excess batting up to
the edges of the batting’s tacking stitch.
