POST
SURGERY
THERAPY By Deborah Karlan, L.M.T.
A FTER TEACHING AEROBICS FOR
with her knees, hips and lower back. She
had both hips and knees replaced. Severe
back pain made her unable to complete
physical therapy on her right knee, which
then froze. Nancy, who found me through
my articles in Tampa Bay Magazine, started
treatment with me because she was going to
have her knee mobilized. She was scheduled
for daily physical therapy the first week,
but was concerned about its pain and stress
to her body. I did restorative massage two
times the first week, once before the
procedure and then several days after it to
help decrease pain in the leg, calf, foot, lower
back and neck. The therapy successfully
helped her complete the mobilization
of the knee. My restorative therapy
included manual lymphatic drainage,
gentle neuromuscular therapy, cold laser
and E-Stim. Nancy is continuing weekly
massage and is completing successful knee
rehabilitation. Her lower back and neck are
greatly improved and she is able to enjoy
a greater quality of life with less pain and
greater mobility.
Restorative Massage is a very effective
post surgery treatment. Mine is all inclusive,
and I do not charge separately for the
modalities or special techniques that I use.
Manual lymphatic therapy is excellent after
surgery to help the body remove waist fluids
and decrease swelling. It very gently, but
effectively, speeds recovery. Neuromuscular
therapy helps break the pain cycle, calming
nerves and flushing deeper tissues. The cold
laser helps repair tissue damage and relieve
pain. The E-Stim relieves pain trigger points.
