At the 2015 Tiger Classic (L-R): Tim Nalls ’97, Kenny Anderson, Alex Wooley ’97, Glenn Permuy ’97 , Ethan Grabill ’97, Steve Shirley ’97, Geoff Goetz ’97, Chris Newcom ’97 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2016 25 Golf for Scholarships t was Christmas break in 2000 when a bunch of young friends from Jesuit’s Class of 1997 decided to get together and reconnect over a round of golf. Sixteen years later, they’re still doing it, every year. Except now, what started as a cluster of high school buddies hitting the links for a nostalgic round has developed organically into a major annual fundraising event – the Tiger Classic – to benefi t their alma mater. 1997 alums Geoff Goetz, Ethan Grabill, Tim Nalls, Chris Newcom, and Steve Shirley – plus now their wives, moms, sisters, kids, etc. – have built up the event through the years and made it highly anticipated every December. Participants commend the fi rst-rate organization, prizes, and atmosphere, and say it keeps them coming back year after year. “Each founder holds a fond place in his heart for the experience and opportunity Jesuit provided,” Grabill said. “As years passed, interest and participation in the event quickly grew. We realized early on we had the opportunity to provide the Jesuit experience to the next generation. “It became the tournament’s goal to act out Jesuit’s mission of being ‘Men for Others’ by funding a year’s tuition, a full scholarship for a deserving student.” Their philanthropy has continued to develop, as the number of participants has grown, and donors and sponsors have come on board. “We’ve decided to expand the I mission to include sponsoring a local family during the holiday season, extending Jesuit’s reach further into our local community,” Grabill said. For the past three years and the forseeable future, the event has been held at Carrollwood Country Club. CCC also hosts the Jesuit Development Offi ce’s annual golf fundraiser for the school’s fi nancial aid program, the Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. Memorial Golf Classic, in April. The Tiger Classic is a 4-man scramble, the fi eld is handicapped, and the $150 entry includes lunch, dinner, tournament memorabilia, and other on-course contests. From the humblest of beginnings – two foursomes of buddies playing a round of golf – to 40 foursomes last year, the Tiger Classic has become a must-do in December for dozens of alums.
