TRAVEL
Any trip to Green Bay must include a visit to Lambeau
Field, where the 13-time National Champion Green Bay
Packers play. Originally named City Stadium, it was
renamed Lambeau Field after the death of the team’s
founder and first coach, “Curly” Lambeau. Uniquely,
the team is owned by its fans, who donated the money
needed over the years to keep it going by building and
improving its facilities. However, Lambeau Field is not
exclusively used for the Packers. Other big games, such
as the one between the University of Wisconsin Badgers
and the L.S.U. Tigers, have been held there.
Lambeau Field has been revered for 60 years.
An impressive new addition has added a Packers Hall
of Fame, a Packers Pro Shop and 7,000 additional seats
to bring its capacity to over 81,000. The stadium’s new
five-story atrium area includes a restaurant and event
facility that bring fans there 363 days a year. The Lambeau
Field Stadium Tour provides you with interesting details,
as well as the opportunity to walk through the players’
tunnel to the field while accompanied by “cheering fans.”
The fans and Packers alike follow many traditions. We
were fortunate to observe one of the most heartwarming
ones, when we attended a Packers’ practice session.
It involves the players leaving the stadium to go to their
practice field a block away. Local children line up at
the exit of the stadium with their bicycles. Each player
chooses a child’s bike to pedal down to the practice field
while the child walks, runs, or skates alongside, chatting
with each other. It is this type of fan appreciation that
has made the Packers the legend that they are for sports
fans all over the world.
The spirit of the team permeates throughout the
town. We witnessed this during a one-hour narrated
trolley ride that visits important sites connected with the
legendary team. We also felt the strong Packers’ ties at
the Titletown Pub and Brewery, which occupies the 1898
vintage Chicago and North Railroad Depot, where the
team once left on trains to play its away games. BRENDA SPAUDE
