JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • WINTER 2016-17 13 Life on Himes Briefs SOLES 4 SOULS Cameron Marlowe ’20 began collecting new and gently used shoes for those less fortunate when he was in elementary school. He has collected and distributed more than 2,000 via Soles4Souls.org, including 500 during a mission trip to Jamaica two years ago. In October, Marlowe launched a shoe drive with the Jesuit football team and in his neighborhood that resulted in 330 pairs of shoes collected. Next summer, Marlowe plans to bring shoes to the Dominican Republic. HONORED ART Quintin Hoggard ’18 captured 1st Prize at the Tampa Museum of Art’s 1st annual Youth Council Art Exhibition. Hoggard was one of seven artists from Jesuit among 50 local students whose work was showcased at TMA during November. Hoggard’s charcoal drawing “Finding Light” was chosen best in show and featured in the main lobby. The other Jesuit students selected were Nicholas Verdugo ’18, Brett Sandborn ’18, Justin Sanchez ’17, Trevor Perez ’18, Diego Perez-Aracena ’18, and Ethan Clark ’18. BOOK DRIVE In November, Jesuit’s Key Club, led by Brice Sewell ’17, completed a book drive, collecting more than 800 children’s books for Reach Out and Read (www.reachoutandread.org). The program encourages early literacy and provides families with the resources to read with their children. The books were donated to pediatric clinics and wards of local hospitals. CHRISTMAS GIVING Before its game on Dec. 17, the basketball team once again provided Christmas gifts to a migrant family. That weekend, members of Agmen Christi traveled to rural Belle Glade along Lake Okeechobee to assist that community in its Christmas preparations. On Dec. 18, 15 members of Agmen Christi made their annual trek to eastern Hillsborough County to distribute Christmas gifts to a migrant community, and two days later 39 members of Agmen Christi served those in need at Metropolitan Ministries’ Holiday Tent. LEADERSHIP RETREAT New this year to Jesuit, the Leaders at Jesuit Retreat at the start of the fall semester brought together student leaders – club offi cers and sports team captains – for a day of leadership exercises at Mary Help of Christians. A cooperative eff ort between the Directors of Student Activities (Mike Scicchitano ’01), Campus Ministry (Fr. Patrick Hough, S.J.), and Athletics (Terry Rupp ’84), retreat topics included forms of communication, composure, confi dence building, servant leadership, commitment, and character, as students engaged in large- and small-group discussions, role-play scenarios, and refl ection. HELPING HAITI Tommy Thiel ’19 made a diff erence for people in Haiti aff ected by the devastation wrought by Hurricane Matthew this fall by spearheading an eff ort through Jesuit’s Key Club to help out a Haitian orphanage, Cabaret Children’s Home, and many others impacted. Thiel collected supplies such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, baby diapers, bandages, and baby formula, and shipped six large boxes to Haiti. Said Thiel: “It is my hope that we can continue to support Cabaret Children’s Home.”
